Rotation, and the noise that comes with it
Rotating projectors give a slowly moving sky, which many people find relaxing. But rotation needs a small motor, and some people can hear a faint hum in a silent bedroom. If you are a light sleeper, look for a projector where you can switch rotation off and keep a still image.
Focus
Ceiling heights vary. An adjustable focus lets you sharpen the stars for your room. Without one, the image may look soft or blurry, especially in a small room where the projector sits close to the ceiling.
Timer
If you want to fall asleep under the stars, a timer matters more than almost anything else. Check it is listed, and ideally how long it runs for.
Brightness control and remote
Being able to dim the projector, or switch it off from bed, makes a real difference for sleep. Not every projector has these, so check the listing rather than assuming.
Discs or a single effect

Where to put a galaxy projector
- Aim at the ceiling. You see it lying down, and a ceiling gives the largest uninterrupted surface.
- Try different distances. The further the projector is from the surface, the bigger and softer the image. Closer gives a smaller, sharper image. Refocus after moving it, if your projector has focus.
- Try it from a low shelf or the floor at the side of the room. An angled projection spreads across more of the ceiling than one pointing straight up from the middle.
- Pale ceilings show the effect most clearly. Dark paint absorbs light and dulls the colours.
- Keep the cable tidy. Run it along the skirting or behind furniture so nobody trips over it in the dark.
