Halls move-in weekends are in full swing across the UK — Royal Holloway ran its arrivals period from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September 2026, and welcome weeks at other universities carry on through the end of the month. Which means a lot of people are currently sitting on a bare mattress under a single, very bright ceiling light, wondering how to make the room feel like theirs. Good uni room lighting ideas fix that faster than anything else you can unpack, and the best ones leave no mark on the wall when you hand the keys back in June.

Are you allowed fairy lights in uni halls?

Usually yes — but the rules genuinely vary between universities and private providers, so read your accommodation handbook or tenancy agreement first. A handful of halls ban decorative lights and candles outright. Many others are relaxed about LED lights but strict about anything with a flame, an old-style filament bulb, or a trailing extension lead.

Three things tend to keep you on the right side of the rules:

  • LED, not filament. LEDs run cool, which matters when a string is sitting against a curtain, a duvet or a pinboard full of paper.
  • Low voltage where possible. USB and rechargeable lights run at 5V rather than mains voltage, so there is no plug-in transformer competing for your one free socket.
  • Nothing blocking a door, window or detector. Never drape lights over a smoke alarm, a heater or a fire door, and never run a cable under a rug or across a doorway where it will be trodden on.

If you are unsure, ask your residence life team by email rather than guessing. It takes five minutes and you get the answer in writing.

Five uni room lighting ideas for a small halls room

1. A curtain of lights behind the bed

The single biggest change you can make to a box room is putting light on the wall behind your head rather than on the ceiling above it. A curtain light does that in one go. Our Smart LED Curtain Lights 3×3m run 300 LEDs across a three-metre-square net, with app control over Bluetooth for colours, patterns, text and animations, plus music sync and a timer. They are USB powered, so they will run from any USB plug or a power bank — handy if the only socket in the room is behind the wardrobe.

2. Put the ceiling to work with a projector

Ceilings in halls are generally blank, white and close. A projector turns that into the most interesting surface in the room, and it takes up no floor space. The USB Starry Sky Projector plugs into any USB port — a laptop, a USB plug, or the car on the drive home — and has a flexible neck so you can aim the starry-sky effect exactly where you want it. It is a good one for a shared room where you don't want to commit to decorating a wall.

3. Fill the window rather than the wall

If your walls are off limits, the window recess is usually fair game. Star Waterfall Fairy Lights hang as falling strands of five-point stars, with multiple light modes and a choice of USB or solar power — no mains plug at all. They are rated for indoor and outdoor use, so they will survive a damp window recess, and the solar option is useful if your desk is nowhere near a socket.

4. One warm lamp you can pick up and move

Every room needs a light you can read by at 11pm without flooding it with overhead white. A small cordless lamp does that job and doubles as the thing you carry to a flat kitchen. The Sunset Mushroom Lamp is USB rechargeable, so there is no cable once it's charged, with touch control and adjustable brightness in a compact desktop size.

5. Light the desk separately from the room

Work and rest in the same four square metres is the hardest part of halls. The fix is two lighting settings rather than one: bright and neutral for essays, warm and low behind you for everything else. If your lights have an app or a remote, save both as presets on day one.

How do you hang lights in halls without damaging the walls?

Blu tack, white tack and Sellotape are the usual culprits behind end-of-year charges — they lift paint and leave marks that show up on the check-out report. Most halls discourage or ban them, and nobody should be drilling anything.

Better options:

  • Removable adhesive hooks or strips. Buy the ones rated well above the weight you are hanging, press them properly, and leave them a full hour before loading. Remove them by pulling the tab slowly straight down the wall, never outwards.
  • Use what's already there. Curtain rails, bed frames, wardrobe tops, shelf edges, pinboard frames and the back of a desk all take lights with no adhesive at all.
  • Weave instead of stick. Trailing a string between books, along a shelf lip or around a headboard looks deliberate and comes down in seconds.
  • Photograph the room the day you arrive. Every wall, every mark. It is the cheapest insurance there is, and it takes two minutes.

Plug-in, USB or rechargeable: a quick buying checklist

Before you order anything for a halls room, run through this:

  • How is it powered? USB and rechargeable lights are the easiest sell to an accommodation office and the easiest to live with when sockets are scarce. Anything mains-powered needs a free socket and a cable route that doesn't cross the floor.
  • Will it run off a power bank? A USB light that will is a light you can put anywhere in the room, not just near the socket.
  • Is there a timer? Worth having if you'd rather your lights turned themselves off than stayed on all night.
  • How long is the cable? Measure from the socket to where you want the light before you buy, not after.
  • Can you dim it? A light with one brightness setting is a light you will stop using by November.
  • Does it pack down? You will move this room in nine months. Keep the box.

A note on the ones that do take a mains plug: our 400-LED tree lights ship with a UK plug adapter, which is fine for a house or a flat but more hassle than it's worth in halls. For a student room, stick to USB and rechargeable.

Frequently asked questions

Can you leave fairy lights on overnight in halls?

Low-voltage LED lights run cool and draw very little power, but the safer habit is to switch them off when you sleep or set a timer to do it for you. Check your accommodation rules too — some ask that decorative lights are off when the room is unoccupied or overnight.

What lights can I use if my halls ban plug-in fairy lights?

Look for USB or rechargeable lights. A USB string can run from a laptop or a power bank, and a rechargeable lamp needs no socket at all once it's charged. Both avoid the extension lead that most bans are really aimed at.

How do I hang fairy lights without blu tack?

Removable adhesive hooks are the usual answer, but you can often avoid adhesive entirely by draping lights over a curtain rail, winding them round a bed frame, or running them along a shelf or the top of a wardrobe.

Will smart lights work without Wi-Fi in halls?

Bluetooth-controlled lights pair straight to your phone and don't need the building's network, which matters because halls Wi-Fi can be fussy about smart devices. Our curtain lights are controlled by app over Bluetooth.

Making the room yours

Nobody remembers the ceiling light. Pick one main idea — the wall behind the bed, the ceiling or the window — add a small lamp you can move, and you're done before your flatmates have unpacked their pans.

Everything above is in our Party & Christmas Lights collection, which carries the USB and rechargeable lights that suit halls as well as the bigger festive sets. We offer tracked delivery in 3–7 working days and 14 days to return anything that isn't right for your room.
