An artificial skylight can create a sun-and-sky effect using electric light and optics, while a tubular daylight system brings outdoor daylight through a roof route. Compare that distinction before comparing brands. This guide helps you prepare a room brief and a shortlist; it does not assign untested star ratings or name a universal winner.
Start with the source of the light
The 2019 CoeLux catalogue, printed page 11 on PDF page 6, describes LEDs, optics and nanoparticle scattering used to simulate sun and sky. The Solatube explanation instead follows daylight from a rooftop dome, through reflective tubing, to a ceiling diffuser.

These are examples of different approaches, not equivalent products in a ranked test. The Solatube source says indoor brightness varies with available outdoor daylight. Its roof route is a different planning question from the ceiling and power requirements of an electric system.
Write a room brief before requesting a quote
Use one sheet for every shortlisted model. Record room dimensions, ceiling construction and available recess depth; attach photographs and mark access for future maintenance. Ask the supplier to return drawings for that exact model rather than a brochure for the whole range.

Hypothetical brief: you want an overhead sky effect in an internal study, but do not have an approved route to the roof. Start by asking electric-system suppliers for ceiling-fit drawings and a viewing demonstration. If a roof route later becomes possible, evaluate a daylighting proposal separately rather than treating it as a cheaper version of the same device.
At the demonstration, sit at the desk and stand at the doorway. Record what you can actually see, whether the effect meets your preference and which settings were used. This is a suggested evaluation method, not a claim that we tested the systems or that one treatment improves wellbeing.
Compare complete proposals, not a promotional price
For each quote, list the named model, accessories, control hardware, installation work and service terms. A lower equipment price cannot settle a comparison if another proposal includes different work.
