Choose solar security lights by checking the charging location, detection zone, useful light coverage and operating mode for the exact model. Start with the place you need to see, then compare candidates against it. This is a buying guide based on manufacturer instructions, not a hands-on test or a ranked list.
Separate three questions before comparing prices
Where can the panel charge, what movement should trigger the light, and what should the light illuminate? Treat these as separate checks. Lumens describe light output; watts describe electrical input. Neither number replaces a plan for your doorway or path.
A documented example is STEINEL XSolar L-S, in the manual covering white EAN 4007841671006 and silver EAN 4007841671013. Its instructions warn that shade, glass and panel orientation can limit operation and that charging takes longer in winter or rain. They also describe sensor-only and sensor-with-basic-light modes. These are model-specific instructions, not promises for every solar light or a guarantee for a UK winter.

Make one copy for each candidate. Write the model code and manual revision at the top; an empty box is a question for the supplier, not permission to assume the answer.

Worked choice: a shaded doorway
Hypothetical planning example: a door sits under a porch, but a nearby wall has an unobstructed view of the sun. Candidate A has an integrated panel; candidate B permits a separate panel. Do not award B a reliability score. First ask whether its approved cable route, mounting position and sensor zone fit the site. If neither candidate meets your needs, keep searching or discuss another lighting approach with an installer.
Do not count a light alone as evidence of burglary prevention, camera identification or a dependable emergency route. Define your lighting task and decide separately what security measures you need.
Check the whole set of operating limits
IP65 describes dust and water-jet protection; it does not by itself establish frost performance, battery temperature limits or year-round availability. Read the model’s environmental and charging instructions together. The XSolar L-S manual, for example, requires its optional USB charging to take place in a dry room because the open socket is not protected against water. Do not transfer that charging method to a different light.
