Plan smart LED strip lights by measuring each run, identifying the exact strip, controller and power unit, and checking their instructions before mounting. Decide which controls you actually need before cutting or sticking anything in place. This guide covers consumer-kit planning and acceptance checks, not fixed electrical wiring or custom power-supply design.

Draw separate runs rather than one total length

Hypothetical room plan: a shelf needs 2.4 m of lit length and a separate TV area needs 1.6 m. Together that is 4 m of light, but the two runs are not automatically one supported installation. Mark the gap, the route to power and the controller position. Ask whether the chosen kit explicitly supports that arrangement; the arithmetic does not approve a splitter, extension, connector or spare cut section.

Make a run schedule

Record for each run Example entry or question Resolve before mounting
Lit and unlit lengths Shelf 2.4 m; lead route measured separately Can an unmodified kit fit the route?
Exact parts Strip code, hardware version, controller and supplied adapter Are these the documented matching parts?
Corners and surfaces Route drawing; surface finish; permitted mounting method What bend and surface restrictions does the manual give?
Changes Shortening, joining or a separate run Is each alteration expressly supported for this model?
Control task On/off, one static colour and one schedule if supported Which app, network and additional equipment are documented?

Check permission to cut before looking for scissors

There is no rule that every smart strip can be shortened. Philips Hue’s UK page for Lightstrip Outdoor 5 metre, EAN 8718699709938, states that it cannot be cut or extended.

A different documented example is the 2022 Tapo L900 EU guide, file for L900-5, revision 1.1.1. Its installation diagram permits cutting only at the indicated locations after unplugging, and warns against sharp bends and bending at LED components. That does not authorise cutting any other strip or reconnecting its offcuts. Confirm the guide applies to your exact hardware before following it.

Keep the kit’s setup sequence and safety limits

The same Tapo guide tells users to assemble its matching adapter, controller and strip before power-up, and to spread the strip out before connecting power. Its safety section limits the documented product to indoor use. Follow the relevant instructions for your kit rather than adapting those steps to exposed wiring or an outdoor installation.

Resolve fixed wiring, uncertain supplies or damaged equipment with an appropriate installer or the manufacturer. Do not use an unverified voltage/current example from a general article to select parts.

Accept the controls before final placement

The UK Tapo L900-5 V1 page describes 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, direct Tapo-app control without a hub, and schedule/timer functions. This is a scoped manufacturer example, not a promise about every strip, hardware revision, voice platform or current app screen.

  1. Identify the model in its documented app and record the hardware version.
  2. Following its setup procedure, check on/off and the static light modes you intend to use.
  3. If scheduling is supported, try one simple schedule and record the actual result.
  4. Keep the original settings in your notes; change one setting at a time if a result differs.
  5. Only proceed to the manual’s mounting stage once the route, parts and required functions are resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut every smart LED strip at a marked point?

No. Check the exact model’s instructions first. Hue Lightstrip Outdoor EAN 8718699709938 is documented as non-cuttable; the specified 2022 Tapo L900 guide has its own unplugging and cut-location instructions.

Can two separate runs share any power supply?

Do not assume so. Use only a documented arrangement for the exact strip, controller and supply. A total length calculation does not approve a splitter, connector or supply.

Does a smart strip always need a hub?

It depends on the exact model. The UK Tapo L900-5 V1 page describes direct app control over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi without a hub. Other strips need their own documented setup.
